An Open Letter to All of Edith's Friends and Loved Ones

On behalf of the Edith Shain family, thank all of you who have sent your condolences and good wishes in the days since our mother’s passing.  It means so much to us to know how much and how deeply she was loved.

We have received kind words and memories from all over the world and it is humbling for us to recognize the incredible significance of our mom’s contribution to the “Greatest Generation”.

Although we knew her as our mother first, she was an inspiration to her many students and most recently, an unmistakable icon to the patriotic spirit of our United States.

The lives she touched as the Times Square VJ Day Nurse will never be forgotten. Veterans, service members and Americans everywhere revere the pride, honor and joy captured in that kiss.

As the Trustee of the Edith Shain Estate, I can assure you our primary concern will be to protect and preserve the memories our mother left behind and to assure that generations of young Americans will know and understand the true meaning of that 14th day of August, 1945.  We will continue her work to honor our country’s veterans and to foster the ideals and patriotism that brought us all together in victory and the end of the war.

If you would like to join us at the Celebration of Life honoring Edith Shain, the V-J Day Nurse please contact us by sending your email to:

VJDayNurse@EdithShainMemories.com

so we can forward you an invitation with the time and location.

The passing of our mother has been a trying and difficult time for us.  On behalf of my brothers Robert and Justin and the entire Shain family; thank you all for your support and kindness.

Sincerely,

Michael Shain
